The May 11 elections were a manifestation that democracy is alive in the Philippines, granting full freedom to the Filipino people to elect their next group of political leaders freely, democratically, and intelligently.

These elections were likewise an affirmation of the political stability of our country and of our claim to the whole world that development can be achieved within the framework of democracy.

My commitment to conduct honest, orderly, and peaceful elections (HOPE) as well as to make these the best and the most credible in the entire Philippine history has been fulfilled, in spite of the doubts raised by many non-believers that there would be no peaceful elections, proclamations, and transition of power.

I do believe that only a credible election can guarantee the survival, expansion, and deepening of our democracy.

At the end of my term, I will step down from the presidency, happy with the thought that i have truly and honestly given my all for the general welfare of our country and our citizenry.

Ultimately, the real will of the Filipino people will prevail.

I therefore urge our citizenry to unite and heal the wounds of division caused by the bitter infighting among political candidates and their loyal supporters. In unity, there is strength; in strength, there is progress.

I likewise urge our people to guard the sanctity of the ballots during the remaining days for counting, canvassing, and proclamation.

We did this in 1992.

I have no doubt that we can do it again.

Kayang-kaya natin ito.

Mabuhay ang mamamayang Pilipino! Mabuhay ang Republika ng Pilipinas!
