There is no doubt that my visit to Europe has been highly successful. Note that I have not asked for any foreign assistance. I have always stressed that the Philippines today is a good investment and trading destination.
This trip has resulted in some 40 agreements, more than half of which were between the Philippines and the five countries that I have visited. The rest were government-to-government agreements.
My trip, I am pleased to say, has achieved all its desired goals and objectives.
Suddenly, the European people and businessmen have noticed the investments possibilities in the Philippines and expressed interest to come and see for themselves.
Many of them have expressed their desire to invest in, among others, heavy machinery and manufacturing equipment, railway systems, computer and electronic systems, natural gas projects, telecommunications, engineering services, petrochemicals, steel industries and shipbuilding.
Aside from the business and diplomatic aspects of the trip, I was happy to have touched base with the large Filipino communities in Italy, Spain, France, Belgium and here in Germany. They were very happy to learn that soon, they will be able to vote in our elections for national leaders in May 1995, even if they are in a foreign country. This is because of a law now about to be passed by our Congress.
I am grateful to the heads of state and government who received me and my delegation warmly, from Pope John Paul II in Castel Gandolfo to President Oscar Scalfaro and Prime Minister Silvino Berlusconi of Italy; to King Juan Carlos II and President Felipe Gonzales of Spain; to President Francois Mitterrand and Premier Eduoard Balladur of France; to King Albert II and Vice-Premier Willy Claes of Belgium; to President Roman Herzog of Germany.
On behalf of the Filipino people and the Philippine Government, I thank them all from the bottom of my heart.
Mabuhay!/Best wishes!
